Why should I become a mentor?

Mentoring a woman or non-binary person who faces barriers to employment can be a transformative journey for both the mentor and the mentee. For the mentee, this guidance often serves as a beacon of hope, illuminating a path through obstacles that once seemed insurmountable. As a mentor, your wisdom, support, and encouragement can instil confidence, build essential skills, and reshape the trajectory of a survivor’s career, helping them overcome systemic and personal barriers.

This newfound empowerment not only alters their professional outlook but also bolsters their personal self-worth and resilience.

Witnessing such profound growth and change is immensely rewarding. It provides a deep sense of purpose and satisfaction, reaffirming the impact you can have on another's life.

The mentoring relationship often fosters introspection and growth, as engaging deeply with another's challenges and perspectives enriches your own understanding of the world, adding layers of depth and empathy to your personal and professional life.

What do we look for in a mentor β€” who is eligible?

Our mentors come from all walks of life, but importantly are:

  • Over 18 years of age

  • Identify as woman or are non-binary

  • Can be located anywhere in Australia with an internet connection

  • Empathic and passionate about supporting women to thrive

The benefits of mentoring for you…

  • PERSONAL GROWTH

Empathy Development: Being a mentor allows for the enhancement of empathy as one gets to understand the unique challenges faced by women and non-binary people encountering employment barriers. This understanding broadens perspectives, making mentors more compassionate leaders.

  • SKILL ENHANCEMENT

Improved Communication Skills: Tailoring guidance and advice to a survivor facing employment challenges will require effective listening and clear articulation of ideas. This experience refines one's communication skills, which are valuable in all areas of life.

Diversified Problem-Solving: Mentors often help mentees navigate complex barriers, pushing them to think creatively and devise innovative solutions. Over time, this hones a mentor's problem-solving abilities, making them more versatile thinkers.

  • ENRICHED NETWORKING AND RELATIONSHIP BUILDING

Diverse Networking Opportunities: Engaging in mentorship often exposes individuals to a wider network of professionals, expanding their circle beyond their immediate environment or industry.

Strengthened Leadership Abilities: Mentoring requires you to guide, advise, and inspire. These responsibilities challenge and cultivate leadership abilities, preparing mentors for higher managerial or leadership roles in their own careers.

Deepened Personal Connections: The mentor-mentee relationship often grows into a profound personal connection, leading to lifelong friendships and collaborations that extend beyond the initial mentoring period.

  • CONTRIBUTION TO SOCIETAL CHANGE

Promotion of Diversity and Inclusion: By mentoring a woman or non-binary person facing barriers, you actively contributes to breaking gender barriers, fostering a more diverse and inclusive workplace.

Economic Empowerment: Guiding someone to employment or career advancement directly impacts their economic status, benefiting their families and communities.

Lasting Impact: The knowledge, skills, and confidence imparted during mentorship often have a ripple effect. The mentee, once empowered, may become a mentor herself, continuing the cycle of upliftment and making a broader societal impact.
